Mulan is a young girl from a famous family of warriors. When a major war breaks out in China, caused by a long, disastrous drought, she disguises herself as a soldier and joins the Khan's army in place of her elderly, frail father.
The war lasts for 12 years, and Mulan steadily rises through the ranks. Ultimately, she is captured by the enemies and thrown into the dungeons, where an old sage helps her escape. In the film's breathtaking second half, Mulan, aided by the magical coin, battles the elements, defeats the enemy, and succeeds in awakening the dragon, which melts the Himalayan snows, ending the long drought. The war is over, but the legend of Mulan lives on to this day.
